D-Day Documents & Materials
On the 6th June 1944, the Allied invasion of Normandy began - Operation Overlord - came after five years of war with Germany.

It was the biggest and most complex combined operation in history, involving co-operation between the naval, air and ground forces on an unprecedented scale and marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War.

Children from Cauldeen Primary School and Inver Primary School had the honour of attending various commemorative events  in London as part of the 'D-Day And Beyond - Their Past Your Future' competition.

The children were given unique opportunities to attend events and interview veterans, and gathered a wealth of resources.

This web site is not only a record of  their visit, but a guide to some of the planning, events, missions, and inventions behind one of the largest and most ambitious amphibious invasions in the history of warfare, and a tribute to the courage of those who took part.

Read about our visits to the Imperial War Museum, the Cabinet War Rooms and H.M.S. Belfast, learn about the role of  the Commandos under Lord Lovat, and find out about  the ingenious inventions and secret preparations behind Operation Overlord.
